Flip PTO? or re-assemble with shaft reversed? The norm in GI stuff is parts/unit reverse ability. Then, figure out where to put more u-joints and carrier beaerings to get around your obstacles.

There are also 1:1 gear boxes that can be used to drop the pto level. Sorta like a boat with a 'V' drive?
