I just had the exact same problem!! I had to run it with the choke on and if I moved the choke a little bit, the motor would die. I could turn the enrichment screw all the way closed and it would still run. Had no effect wich way I turned it. Turned out to be a blockage way up in the idle orifice tube, you couldn't see it. Took a real fine wire and the air compressor and unclogged it. First time I hit the start peddle it fires right up and I don't even need the choke on. Check that tube.
