I have been restoring to original condition a 1948 B1PW that my Dad bought new in 1948. In the process I took the starter and generator to a well known local shop for repair/rebuild. When I went to pick them up the bill was very low in price. I asked what he did to them and the shopman said "All they needed was cleaning up. I cleaned the comutators and undercut the segements. They would have worked fine without doing that, but since I had them apart I did it. They should last another 50 years." I also have a 1955 C3PW which does just fine with a generator as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, I say.
