I didn't see any reference to the 3,000 mile oil change, but I don't consider it a myth. The shorter the time in a motor the cleaner your oil stays. 3,000 miles might be too long for some applications. All I know is in over a million miles and 45 years of driving, in all types of climates, frequent oil changes means a clean motor. Less sludge, less carbon, less metal fragments etc.
