The points should open .018 inch (.45mm, about 1/2 mm). Openings much larger will keep the points open too long, not allowing the magnetic flux to build enough to make a good spark at higher rpm's. At lower speed, the flux has enough time to build up and give a good spark. Same with a coil, since it takes a good spark at higher speed.
