Tie rod ends HELP????

Is there a easy way of installing the Tie Rod?
I've got a 2x6 pushing on the upper part of the tie rod against the steering arm and I can only compress the spring 3/4 of the way and can't seat the ball into socket.
Any HELP!!!!! One busted nuckel so far....

PS COTM the manual just said to reverse order.
