torque converter

I just got my hands on a late seventies PW. The previous owner had transfer case problems and removed the tc and tranny. He did not remove the torque converter from the driveplate. Haynes tells me this WILL cause damage to the driveplate, the pump bushing and the oil seal. Is Haynes correct or should "will" be "may"?
