If the anode and the cathode touched you would have a short circuit and draw huge current. The results with a short with a potiential current a battery can supply could melt wires, heat wires so hot something they are touching could catch on fire, or worse. My opinion is DO NOT DO IT THAT WAY. I would not even want to do it with fuse proctection.
