The last year for the 4.2 was 1990, 4.0's started in 1991. The blocks look very similar and many parts are interchangeable. The 4.2 developes more torque, the 4.0 developes more horsepower. Some folks take the 4.2 crank (longer stroke) and use it in the 4.0 (larger bore) to make a 4.5 stump puller/horsepower machine.
