I guess it's possible for a bowl to crack, but evaporation is a definite problem. And very few carbs can actually 'drain back', since the inlet fitting is above the fuel level in the bowl. There were some fuel pumps with primer levers on the side- looks like a heavy wire bail. If you have one,Pump that before cranking engine. Otherwise, when attempting to start an engine that hasn't run is a few days, you might try cranking a couple turns, then pump the gas pedal a couple times to prime it, then try starting it for real.
