When were M-37s built?

My friend who bought the 100 dollar M-37 is curious about his new toy. As he is computer illiterate I said I would help him out.
I believe M-37s started being built in 51, when did they stop making them?
The data plates on the glovebox door are unreadable, where would he find a serial # so he can determine the year?
What were the major changes during production and how were they designated?
