Tim, when the car in front of you had brakes that were no better than yours, you had half a chance of not slamming into his rear - if you kept a safe distance.
Also, most drivers back then had "Daddy's" to teach them how to drive and to tell them that a truck pulling a trailer could not stop as easily so don't cut into his safe following distance.
When I first started pulling trailers in 1956, I used a hitch that clamped onto the bumper and the trailer had no brakes. But in 1956, trailers were not all that common and drivers noticed them and gave them a little distance. All drivers back then were a lot more courteous and that helped make the whole situation a lot better.
If you have driven a car, let alone pulled a trailer in the last ten years, you know that drivers will pull into any space in front of you.
What I said about brakes is absolutely true for driving today.
