I've always been taught and know that the yokes on the drive shafts should be lined up to prevent drive shaft/u-joint failure, "indexed".
While cleaning up the front replacement drive shaft for my white '49 Power Wagon, I crawled under the truck to quickly measure the length to be sure it was the correct one, and noticed the front drive shaft was not "indexed". That's probably what caused it to fail?
Then I looked at the rear and intermediate shafts, and was shocked to see they were not properly "indexed" as well. I've hot had any of the drive shafts out, but have had the rear disconnected from the transfer case, but made sure to not pull the yoke off, so the truck has been this way for as long as I've owned it.
Question, There is no reason, or requirement on these trucks for the drive shafts to NOT be "indexed" is there?
I'll be pulling them all apart and properly "indexing" them before I head to TN in a couple of weeks.
Later,
Will
