Two Part driveline Question

I went to check the fluid level in the rear diff. and removed a long screw and locknut just opposite the fill plug. ( I found the correct fill plug later)

What does this long screw and locknut regulate/ adjust inside the rear pumpkin?

Second part, how much radial play/ rotation is acceptable in the front differential? When rotating the front driveshaft there is a lot more movement than for the rear axle.
