But that old radiator was plenty big. I'd say get it boiled out, then get a pressure cap. Might need the rad shop to change filler to a modern one.
How to tell if rad is plugged? Disconnect hoses, tape up top fitting. Hold hand over bottom one, fill with hose. Throw hose away, let hand off bottom, listen in tank and watch flow. Sucking noise means plugged tubes, strong flow that stops quickly is GOOD, slow flow that dribbles long time means radiator has a bad prostate, needs roto-rooter job.
If the rad is OK, is that a used motor, with a bad head gasket or crack? A smog tailpipe sniffer in the rad will tell, should have no hydro-carbons there.
Thermostat good? Lower hose not collapsing under throttle? Timing OK?
