The side play is set with big adjustment 'nuts', so no need for spreader. The hard part is unscrewing the 2 halves of the differential housing, I guess once you remove the lock pin you need heat and a couple giant pipe wrenches? But only if you have to work on the side gears? Then, the pinion bearings (at least on M37's)have 3 sets of tapered rollers, and are a baitch to work in and out of their seats. As I recall, 2 are shimmed together and the 3rd is under the piniion nut. Try one and see, sounds like you will have lots to practice on. I never put one together, only took it apart, then found a used one instead.
