Here in Scotland we produce the stuff, yet the most expensive palce in Europe to buy it is out on the islands where it is piped ashore.
It's about 75% or even 85% tax, but because everyone has to pay it then it levels out pretty quickly.
Old fuel-guzzling cars and trucks are cheap to buy because no-one can afford to run them as daily drivers, but plenty of people will pay £1 (about $1.90c) per mile to run an old Mack or Dodge for a hundred miles a year or less - me included. Owning these things is quite reasoanble, doing a lot of miles is insane at those fuel prices tho'
