Well guys, thanks for some excellent info! I was completely in the dark on this one. The following was posted by me on other boards as well:
Got to look at the truck today. It's in fair shape for a '53. It's called a Reo Eager Beaver and is powered by a Reo Gold Comet engine. The frame is cut and an outer frame slipped over so that it could be converted to a semi-truck recovery wrecker. It has a PTO at the 2 speed transfer case and a second PTO at bed front for wrecker boom. All recovery equipment gone now, just a 16' flat bed. Winch gone.
There is a 3 inch rust hole in bottom front corner of driver door, and some lighter rust at fender/hood/cab junction. Whole forward section is there. Seats are there, driver's needs upholstery. May have full gauges, but one looked like a replacement. Top is fiberglass, and all glass is there I think.
Hasn't been started in 10 years but block was drained and ran when parked. Could be restored, but a large project.
Based on your many replies I believe the price would be more like $1,500 or less, maybe $1K even.
It's located in Northern California near Mt. Shasta. I cannot use it even if it was free, so if anybody wants it I will negotiate the best price for you. The owner lives on the side of the mountain in a yurt and doesn't do civilization much.
Thanks again guys!!
