Most everyone likes the 6 speed. I don't because I am always searching for 5th and 6th. and it doesn't shift smoothly. Everyone tells me it gets better with wear. I also don't like the ratio spread. I can take off in 3rd gear easily. I have the 3:73 ratio. I liked the Getrag 5 speed in my 90 and the 5 speed in my 99. just not this 6 speed. I have not put a lot of miles on the truck since I bought it last Jan 04.
I always need the work vehicles. So it is in the garage with a bunch of stuff stacked behind it for work. It is a chore to get it out So between the 6 speed and the work to get it out of the shop I have now got about 3000 miles on it for the 13 months I have owned it.
When I do drive it for long periods, I do get used to it, but still even then I will be rowing thru the gears and have trouble with 5th or something. I have more trouble when I am Not beating on the truck then when I am lazily going thru the gears. If I used the truck all the time for heavy towing then I could see the 6 speed. But running empty I can't shift it fast enough to use all that power.
The landscaper I sold my 99 to went and pulled the 5 speed and swapped in an auomatic. he put all kinds of spped equiptment on it and he couldnt shift the 5 speed fast enough to race his buddies with the ferds. Now he blows them away.
