Thanks for your replies folks,
Dodge did make a 12v push pedal setup as a transition, I saw one years ago, and have just maybe found one.
Re the 6v/12v starter discussion, I agree that 6v starters work ok with a 12v setup, and I think the reason is as follows: correct me if I'm wrong here, I've never had a lever type starter apart but I've been studying the manual and parts book exploded views; my understanding is that the lever has a fork inside the starter that goes into a collar which pushes on the bendix so that when the pedal is pushed, it first slides the bendix back to engage the flywheel ring gear, ie without turning the rotor, then as the pedal gets pushed further, the motor switch contacts and the motor starts to turn thus preventing the bendix from slamming into the gear as with most all solenoid types. My 52 packard did this using a solenoid on the starter, first pushed the pinion back, then cranked the motor. Actually a great design, saves all the teeth. conclusion: 12v/6v works fine with the push pedal but not so good with the solenoid as it then slams the bendix back much harder than designed for. My bendix had all the earmarks of this: lots of wear on the rear face and some damage to the teeth on both gear sets, ie more than usual.
Any further comments most welcome,
cheers,
Max
I'm also wondering if my old starter had the correct bendix, 1 1/8 dia across the teeth, it always sounded like it was grinding or maybe riding too high, I've had 1 reply; theis bendix was 1" dia. Any ideas on that?
