I've got 2 different owners manuals showing the same oil flow, a B-1-PW original printed late 1948 and a 1945-71 reprint. They show the oil supply to the filter coming from the oil galley located above the camshaft area. The one diagram shows oil supply going into the top of the throw-away sealed canister filter and the other diagram shows supply going into the bottom of the replaceable cartridge housing. The oil flow in both diagrams is indicated by arrows in the supply and return lines. The return is plumbed to the casting area of the relief valve. My 1948 B-1 shop manual shows a picture of the relief plunger and spring with the longest portion of the plunger body bearing surface to be against the spring. They also mention the standard spring # 1119995 has no painted color, a lighter spring #1119994 is red, and heavier spring #1119996 is green. From the illustration in the parts book it looks like there would be constant flow past the relief plunger if it were installed backwards and may account for low pressure at idle. Depending on what brand of filter housing you have determines where the oil supply and return lines are plumbed to the filter housing due to each manufacturers intended oil flow path. Deluxe and Purolator "N" housings are fed from the bottom, certain Fram housings are fed from the side. Most bypass filter housings have a one way check valve to allow oil flow past the filter if it becomes plugged and hooking the oil lines up backwards will defeat the purpose of the check valve. But in most cases a filter will be changed long before plugging becomes an issue. I'm using a Baldwin sock filter in my Deluxe housing and I think they still use a seal around the center post but I'm not 100% certain.....but I'll go have a look.
