The more I thought about it, I concluded I don't need bead locks for off-road. The problem the off-roaders have is unseating tubeless tires when running low pressure. With tubes in the tires to retain the air, I stand a better chance of the tire reseating itself. Now if I was concerend about maintaining traction because someone had shot bullet holes in my tires, that might be a different story.
I aired my 11.00 XLs down to about 10 psi, and you could barely see a buldge in the sidewall. You could, however, tell a big difference behind the wheel. The ride really smoothed out, and steering effort increased a lot.
