Who told you it was junk? It doesn't mean it's junk, only needs to be tighten, new holes drilled and pins installed as long as the threads appear ok and no cracks in the case or cap. If you still have the bearings on it, stick it back in the carrier without the ring gear and tighten the bearings back up. Check the ring gear flange for run out using a dial indicator. If it's more than .005 out, then it's junk.
New case $400 dollars (I got a bad case and this was the price a week ago. Still on the dealer's shelf in a new box, and a very good price the dealer says. Hum!)
Ring & Pinion $350
Check with some of the part suppliers for a used take out.
