Linseed oil is the binder in all old oil paints and varnishes, but without fillers to act like fibers to hold the hardened 'varnish' together you will have a short lived finish. It would be a good primer though, and is used as such on much of the metal products sold. Just don't expect it to last long when exposed to weather. And without hardeners it will stay relatively soft and gummy- I'd hate to have to sand it off of one of Judd's trucks. But it might suffice as an undercoat.
