Pure lead melts at too high a temp to work easily, solder alloys melt much lower. I think soldering up holes in your cars is a good idea, but leaded solder would suffice. Lead-free came about to over-protect the drinking water, not the plumber. You won't be exposed to any more lead than the plumbers of the last 40 years.....
