Well the easy to see difference is the steering arm on the drivers side knuckle.
The 61 and up axles have a straight steering arm, and the 60 and older trucks have a curved steering arm.
I have pictures of both if anyone wants to see.
As for the overall axle, people have claimed that the spring perches are in a different locations on the later trucks, and the axle does not end up centered as the perch by the pumpkin can not be moved.
I have not tried myself, but this is what I have been told.
The 61 and up axles mount to the springs in a different fashion, which may or may not be a problem.
Another problem is the spring width, the reason the 57-58 axles will not swap into a 59-60 is that the springs are much narrower on the 57-58 trucks, and the bolt holes to mount the spring to the passenger side spring perch would be covered by the wider 59-60 spring. The 61 and up springs may be wider still, and that would make the springs loose on the perch if a later axle was used.
I have pictures of most of this stuff if people need to see it.
