The nut needs to be tight. I forget what the spec is at the moment but I use a 3/4 drive flex bar to remove and install the nut. The adjustment of the pinion bearings is done with a spacer on the pinion shaft between the bearings. If you did not replace the pinion or bearings you should be able to tigthen it up wit out any issues. You do not want the nut to be loose at all.
