You're probably correct about the difference between the light and vacuum gauge, although I have found the difference to be around 3-5 degrees. I prefer the gauge as easier to hook up and I can actually "see" what the engine is doing. The light just tells you when number one is firing, that's all. You will find that the max vacuum setting will work better on a cold engine, or in the winter. When the motor is hot, or the air warm, the tendency for hard starting is greater.
