That was a cool site and it may have the actual answer as to why the 3 degrees angle is not locked in concrete. From your source: " When the transmission output shaft centerline and axle input shaft centerline are parallel, the u-joint operating angle permissible is length of driveshaft divided by five. Example: A short coupled driveshaft with a 15" length would be limited to 3 degrees maximum operating angle. A 30" shaft would be limited to 6 degrees."
That would explain why a 60" drive line could run at 12 degrees without vibration. It seems backwards, but it is not. It seems that the equation is logarithmic! That is WHAT I was looking for! I can now sleep again! ha!ha!
