This is coming a little late, since this post is so far down, but I am just now getting caught up on checking the forum, as I have been away from it for a few days.
I had an e-mail discussion with Clint Dixon (sorry, Clint, I hope I don't irritate you by speaking up in your place) regarding this subject a couple of years ago, and he informed me that he commonly cruises at about 3000 rpm in his Power Wagons (with 230 flathead sixes), and has done so for many years and many thousands of miles with no problem. If it's good enough for Clint, I think it should be good enough for the rest of us.
I now follow the 3000 rpm rule of thumb, and have had no problems in the 6000 or so miles since I rebuilt the engine.
