....I was wondering the same thing, early reports place it at 8.9, that is unfathomable, the Alaskan Earthquake in the 60's was 8.1, each point on the Rickter Scale is a magnitude of 10 greater, so 8.2 is 10 times more powerful than an 8.1. (at 7.5 you cannot stand without support) so that quake is 90 times more powerful than the most powerful American earthquake. The resulting tidal wave has killed at least 9,000 people in Southern Asia and India, the toll is expected to rise as it is still nightime there.
