Rear Locked up on maiden voyage

Hi all
I have been checking in (& listening from afar) on the forum since I decided I wanted a PW back in March 04. Finally got one and now I guess it's my turn with some questions. Just got done with painting the frame & ready to replace a missing cross member & put on a flat bed. Making the maiden voyage approx. 1.0 miles to my friends welding shop when the rear axel locked up. Tore up the yoke, but appears to be no damage to rear drive shaft. Wheels still locked up. Questions... any "run of the mill" reasons this may happen?; what should I look for and any pitfalls etc. when fixing?
