The problem is that if a person gets ejected from a vehicle or crashes his motorcycle without wearing a helmet, there's a good chance that the injuries received will result in permanent disabilities. That means that it will cost hundreds of thousands (possibly millions, depending on how young you are) in medical bills that the insurance companies will pass on to me and every other reader on this forum for the rest of your life. Multiply this by the number of these accidents per year and you can see why this, as well as other issues, has pushed health care costs through the roof. I'll all for freedoms, but if you don't want the law, then sign a waiver that says if your injured because you weren't wearing a safety device, you and your family are soley responsible for providing the care with no help from the goverment or the insurance companies. Most folks would never do that, so you enact laws that force people to use these safety devices and as a result prevent injuries and hopefully keep medical costs down for all Americans. Remember, if you don't have enough insurance, the goverment will get stuck with the bill which means more taxes for all of us. Whew... that was long and I suppose I'll get hammered for my view, but no one ever seems to think about this.
