When my '53 Chevy broke an axle a few years ago, I used a flexible but stiff piece of plastic rod from the open differential to shove the splined end out of the housing. It was a painful process, but simple enough that it worked. There is a step it got stuck on, but then I could grab it from the wheel end. I thought of using a magnet, but it would have to be very strong and not get hung up on the housing itself.
Finding a pusher with the right combination of length, cross sectional area, flex and stiffness is the key.
I have extra axles for the Power Wagon, so according to the spare parts correlary of Murphy's Law, my PW axles will never break!
