I think we're on the same page. It's an ethical dilemma for the parties involved to work out. Once again presuming we're getting the straight story, Who takes the hit ? The victim of the theft? Or the victim of the illegal sale? I've seen courts come down on either side of the issue, so nothing is cut and dried. In any case I don't think we are getting the full story here.
As an Ex-Cop my BS detector goes off on a regular basis. My first move , If I were investigating this thing, would have been to TTY the local dept. in the recipients area to do a little snooping for me. I'd ask them to run his DMV records and see how many transfers he'd done in the last twelve months.The point is I'd want to know as much as possible about the "buyer" before making any contact with him. And if the deal was screwy enough the "victim" would get the same attention.
I know there are at least fifteen or more current or former Law Enforcement officers on this forum. I doubt if any of them would tip their hand and risk the recovery of a stolen vehicle before the legwork was done.
