Sounds like somebody got a little confused when they installed the radio, and picked up power off the turn signal hot lead, which is connected to stop light circuit. They might have connected right down at the stop light switch by the brake pedal. It's supposed to be wired into the circuit off of the accessory terminal of your ignition switch.
You can run your headlights with a relay system, taking power direct and very close from battery, but switching the circuit on and off with the relay. That improves headlights, but not alternator output.
I'll post a link to an alternator upgrade that will increase the current flow considerably. Using the upgrade, plus a relay lighting system, will have your lights about as good as they can get, unless you add halogen bulbs etc.
