It's a different style of 8-point from what you're thinking. It's not like a normal 8-point socket wrench socket that fits old-fashioned square-headed lag screws and such. It's for a spindle nut that has 8 flats on it (shaped like a stop sign). Although people get the nuts off by using a big pipe wrench or a cold chisel dug into one corner, it's worth it to invest in the correct socket.
