M37 VIN location

I'm assuming the frame number is on the outside of the frame behind the left front wheel somewhere, but with all the layers of paint on my truck I can't find any sign of it. Before I start grinding all the paint off everything in the vicinity, can somebody tell me about where to start, at least whether it's forward or back of the axle? Thanks.
