Yes you can do that. What Vaugh said about the interchange manual is the way to go for that project. OR you could put in an early WC 3/4 ton 8 3/4 without as many modifications. The difference between the 1/2 ton and the early 3/4 ton is the 1/2 ton diff is a 2 spider set up and the 3/4 ton has 4 spider gears and the ratios are different, but your ring and pinion will bolt to the carrier on a early 3/4 ton diff. Still not as strong as the 9 5/8 diff, but no slouch either
