I would bet all your older machines have copper windings, unlike the newer rigs which use mostly aluminum. I have a Thermalarc 250(with copper windings). New, with tweko torch, spool gun and two tanks was right at $1850(4years ago). It has welded everything from 22 gauge SS to 3/4" plate on a Cat carryall without so much as a wimper. I burned up half a 40# spool of .035 wire in just under two hours and never overheated once.
