Starters...230 vs. 251

Is there a difference in a starter between a 251 and a 230? I have a 251 in my 49 PW (a transplant from a 62 model doner truck). I took a starter from a 230 parts truck that I have thinking it was a direct swap and installed it in the 251 syncro 4 speed set up. This 230 starter bound up against the fly wheel and locked the motor down. It looks like part of the collar covering the bendix and drive gear is a little longer than the original 251(silenoid operated) than the lever/foot operated 230 starter. Is it a totally different started or do I just need to grind the housing a bit for clearence?
