Michigan is a state of neat variety. The ugly is urban areas, Detroit, Suburbs of Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, etc. The bad, and not so ugly is Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Also the lower half of the lower penninsula is building up land prices skyrocketing etc. Now for the good. Pretty much most places north of US-10 is decent to live, but not alof of jobs. But lots of open country, woods etc to play. The upper penninsula is super nice. But winters are long and cold, and very few jobs, but lots and lots of room to play with old iron, and people leave you alone. Here in Michigan, we have 4 seasons, as each part of the year is quite different. In the winter, you have snow to play in or plow, early spring and fall there is mud to play in, in the summer, take your vehicles on trails or on the sleeping bear sand dunes. I live in the "thumb" in farm country about an hour and a half north of Detroit, it is nice but building up super super fast.
Tennessee is a nice state also. and if I were to relocate, I would head down there. northern Arkansas is really good, Eastern Kentucky is nice also.
