Tim, I've seen some disc brake kits lately, for trailers, that are not too expensive. The problem with surge brakes is that they require the force of the tow vehicle to apply pressure to activate them (the 'surge'). I've had two different types that were just about impossible to back up with because the backing action simulated the 'surge', as the brakes would activate and lock up. This is not supposed to happen, but it did. I assume that you will be backing up to dump....= ) So if you do go with surge brakes, check out the type of overide function offered to be sure that backing will free the brakes.
