Thanks for the report Glen. I will keep searching for a source for the closed slot gaskets. I will try the experiment when I get a chance and compare results.
I did not remove a carburetor from my trucks today, but I did search through my stash of used carburetor parts. I found 17 of those old gaskets. (I don't think I have ever thrown any away). Of the 17, only one was closed slotted like the one pictured above. This possibly tells me one of two things: that one oddball gasket was installed as a substitute at one time, or one of the carbs that I have pulled over the years had never before been removed from the truck and still had the original gaskets.
I potentually have the answer right here in front of me. I am holding a Carter CARbureTER Gasket Assortment #191. It lists the following applications (among others): Dodge truck CARbureTERS ET1, ET2, and ET4. It is still in the original packaging, dated July 15, 1952, and has never been opened....hmmm.
