V.I.N. Question on WC's

Got given the remains of a 1/2 ton WC, they said it started out as an ambulance but I'd like to find out for sure. Is the VIN located in the same place as the PW? Can you tell by it what this started out as? It has no engine and a civi. cab but I got a title from 1947 that says it's a 1942 panel. Any help would be great, sorry for the long post. Dean
