The large ground strap that interconnects the engine block and the body of the vehicle is broken or missing. The majority of the amperage is now attempting to flow through the smaller wire that is overheating from the effort. By cutting that (only) ground path to the body, no current can flow.
Try this to verify my theory: take "half a set" of jumper cables, (one cable) and jump from a convenient chassis point, with bare metal, to the negative terminal of the battery.
