I'm attempting to build something resembling a poor attempt at a road across a steep hillside on my place using my 1950s-vintage (pony-start) D4 cat with a straight blade. Naturally, I'm also building in the uphill direction so can't use gravity to help push dirt down. It's not going very fast, and this afternoon I got too close to the edge, took a scary sideways ride to the bottom at a steep angle, got high-centered in soft dirt and had to winch her out, much to the detriment of 3 trees. Am I trying to do something these rigs just weren't made to do? Do I need a D8 or 9 for serious side-hill road building? How steep a sidehill can a cat slide down without rolling over?
