OK, I finally got/made time to get back to working on the Power Wagon, and decided to replace the rear Transfer Case Seal that was leaking. Since I don't expect to get to re-building it for the next year or two, I figured the cost of a seal was cheap as compared to the mess the thick oil left.
After getting the old seal out, I slid the rear roller bearing out to give it the once over. It’s a Timken 2793, made in the USA. Well it didn't look as good as I had hoped. Some of the Rollers have spots where the chrome has come off the roller, not completely, but in spots leaving pits in them.
I checked the race, and it felt smooth and good.
Now for my question. Have any of you ever experienced this, and if so, what did you do? I hate to install the new seal and then have the bearing go bad and cause me to replace it and the seal before I get to the re-build point.
Is the bearing still in good enough shape to run in the truck until then since it's not driven a lot?
What is the best source for these bearings? Napa wants $22.99.
Thanks,
Will
