In 2000, when I restored my Bumblebee, the fuel tank was really bad. I cut the end out, black beauty blasted all the rust. I then welded the end back on and coated the inside with Hirsch Tank Sealer. Its Susposed to be FAA Approved. I followed all the instructions to the letter.
Today 4 years later on my way home from the dump, the engine shut down fuel problems. Got my trailer and brought her home. No fuel being coming from the fuel pump. By mouth I could not blow down the fule line towards the tank. Plugged !!! Got the air hose out and one shot it was open and free.
Dropped the tank and looked inside. The Hirsch coating is peeling off in large pieces. I am taking it to a place that does the "Re-nu" process on Monday.
Dont know why its peeling, the instructions were followed, I even called Hirsch and asked if it would work in a blast job as described above. They assured me it would.
Just wanted to share with so anyone considering coating the tank would also have this info, failure after 4 years. Glad I was not in the airplane it was approved to be used on.
Now the funny part...Where I flamed out, there were some teen age boys stacking logs for a chain saw artest. They let me use the phone to call Tam. When I showed up with my trailer, I dropped the ramps which are kind of steep. They asked if they could help me push it up the ramps.....that made my back hurt just thinking of pushing a PW up ramps. I thanked them, but told them I had a winch on the trailer.
