When I first got into this hobby, though there were more parts in the world, they were scattered and harder to find. That is your point, I think, and I agree. More dealers, as well as more organized and better communications among everyone have changed all of that dramatically.
Having said that, the supply of parts, excluding large caches occasionally discovered by Dave Butler and others, continues to decline. We are, of course, assisted in our efforts by the reproduction of parts and useful modification components; disc brake conversion kits, for example. I would still like to see someone reproduce brake drums. I hope we still see that happen.
Having a larger, more organized hobby is helpful, it is like a big support group. I recall when I attended the first rally in Fairfield. When you lived off in your own locale, and were the only person you know with a truck, it was possible to feel pretty isolated. So.... When I saw all of those Power Wagons and M37’s and WWII Dodges all rolling in — I particularly remember in vivid detail the exhaust notes of the trucks coming around the corner of the registration building — I thought I might just hyperventilate from excitement. I discovered there were a lot more people besides me....
